 Awards, Honors

  • American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology
Clemens von Pirquet Award, Third place, November 2003

° Dr. Ranta was awarded this prestigious award from this national allergy society for his work in identifying two different proteins that are shared by Poinsettia plants and by Natural Rubber Latex. He took a sample of latex allergic people and he discovered that 40% of them also had antibodies to the Poinsettia plant. This discovery confirmed that people with a severe allergy to latex may also be at risk of having an allergic reaction when pruning or when in contact with the white milky fluid in the poinsettia plant stem and leaves.
° Dr. Ranta’s Poinsettia study was featured in the Los Angeles LA Times, as well as numerous other publications, such as the Chicago Tribune, the Lansing State Journal, as well as numerous websites on the internet.
